Patients who had surgery to remove carotid artery plaque were followed for about three years. Those whose removed plaque contained detectable microplastics and nanoplastics went on to have heart attacks, strokes, or death at 4.5 times the rate of those whose plaque did not.

Unlike most microplastic research, this study measured exposure first and outcomes afterwards — which is why it carries more weight than a cross-sectional finding. The association held independent of cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, and diabetes.

Psyllium Husk
Primary fiber matrix

When psyllium contacts water in the gut, it swells into a viscous gel that physically traps particles — including microplastics and PFAS-bound bile — before they can reach the gut lining. It's one of the most studied gel-forming fibers in human nutrition.

Research: Scientists at Boston University and UMass Lowell found that gel-forming fibers including psyllium can trap PFAS inside the fiber gel, enabling removal via feces. "By consuming gel-forming fibers such as psyllium with a meal, we can trap PFAS inside the fiber gel, which can then be removed via feces," said lead researcher Dr. Dhimiter Bello. Fermented-Food Probiotic
Particle binding & excretion

Certain lactic acid bacteria carry cell-wall surface groups that grab onto (adsorb) microplastic particles in the gut, forming a complex that leaves the body through normal bowel transit. This is physical adhesion, not digestion — the bacteria don't break plastic down, they hold onto it. This ability is highly strain-specific: in one screen of 784 strains, the large majority showed little useful binding. The strains that perform best come from fermented vegetables, where tolerance for acid and salt appears to carry over into surviving stomach acid and bile. DDM1 uses a lactic acid probiotic derived from fermented foods, selected against those same criteria.

Research context: Independent groups have identified specific lactic acid strains that grab onto (adsorb) microplastic and increase its excretion. A 2025 Frontiers in Microbiology screen of 784 strains found the top performers reached 70–80% surface-binding in vitro while tolerating bile salt and pH 2.5; in mice they produced a 34% increase in polystyrene excretion and a 67% reduction in particles remaining in the intestine. A separate 2026 study of a kimchi-derived strain reported comparable binding under simulated intestinal conditions. These studies establish the mechanism and set the benchmark for strain selection — neither describes DDM1 itself, and the strains they tested are proprietary to their respective research groups. Okra Extract
Polysaccharide binding agent

Okra's mucilage — its natural gel-like fiber — carries surface chemistry (hydroxyl and carboxyl groups) that act as binding sites for microplastic particles. In water-treatment research, okra extract physically adsorbed — that is, particles stuck to its surface — and trapped microplastics, pulling them together into clumps. We selected these polysaccharides for that binding chemistry, with the aim of capturing particles in the gut.

Research: A peer-reviewed study published in ACS Omega (2025) found that okra and fenugreek polysaccharides removed microplastics from water samples as effectively as synthetic chemical flocculants — with fenugreek removing 93% and okra 67% of plastics within one hour. The study tested samples from surface, ocean, and groundwater sources. ACS Omega, 2025.
Fenugreek Extract
Galactomannan-rich fiber

Fenugreek's galactomannan polysaccharides complement the okra binding matrix. In that same water-treatment research, fenugreek extract showed the highest microplastic removal of any plant polysaccharide tested — which is why we paired it with okra in the fiber matrix. It also contributes to the viscosity of the gel formed in the gut.

Research: The same ACS Omega (2025) study confirmed fenugreek polysaccharides removed 93% of microplastics from water within 60 minutes — the highest removal rate of any single plant extract tested. Acacia / PHGG
Solubility & gut tolerability

Partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) and acacia fiber are added for two reasons: they improve the texture and mixability of the powder — making the daily habit easier to sustain — and they support a healthy gut microbiome environment, reinforcing the gut barrier that the binding mechanism is designed to protect.

Research: Soluble fibers including PHGG are associated with short-chain fatty acid production and gut barrier reinforcement — a robust gut lining reduces the ability of environmental compounds to penetrate into the bloodstream. No. DDM1 is not a detox, cleanse, or flush. It's a daily functional layer that reduces what your body absorbs at the gut level — before absorption occurs.
DDM1 is a fiber-based formula, and like any soluble fiber it can have a modest effect on the absorption of some minerals (such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, or iron) if taken at the same time as a mineral-rich meal or supplement. At the doses used here that effect is small and well understood from decades of fiber research. To keep it minimal, we suggest taking DDM1 apart from your multivitamin or iron supplement. If you take prescription medications, consult your healthcare provider first.
DDM1 is a fiber-forward formula with a probiotic, and people with conditions like SIBO or IBS can react differently to added fiber and probiotics — some do well, some are more sensitive. We're not able to give medical advice, and DDM1 isn't intended to diagnose, treat, or manage any condition.
